BREXIT IS HAPPENING!

The UK will leave the EU on 31st December 2020. That means that as of 1st January 2021 companies in the UK that employ or hire EU citizens will need to make additional checks to make sure they have the right to work in the UK.

 

DO I NEED TO PANIC?

Well, you need to start putting the correct checks in place. For EU citizens already in the UK before end of December 2020, companies can continue to employ and hire them as long as they have an appropriate proof of right to work. A valid passport or National Identity Card is sufficient until 30 June 2021. Any EU citizen that wasn't settled or working in the UK before 31st December 2020 will need to provide a valid right to work document. 

 

WHAT HAPPENS AFTER 30TH JUNE?

To hire any EU citizen from the 30th June onwards you will need to ensure they have a valid ID and one of the following

  1. An up to date work visa or permit to work 

  2. A proof of settlement status 

 

If you have EU citizens working for you already, you should have them provide you with the correct documentation in good time to ensure that they can continue working for you post 30th June 2021. 

 

WHAT’S THIS NEW IMMIGRATION SCORING SYSTEM?

A new immigration system will apply to people arriving in the UK from 1 January 2021 and EU citizens moving to the UK to work will need to get a visa in advance. EU citizens applying for a skilled worker visa will need to show they have a job offer from an approved employer sponsor to be able to apply. If you’re an employer planning to sponsor skilled migrants from 2021, and are not currently an approved sponsor, you should consider getting approved now - you can do that here: https://www.gov.uk/uk-visa-sponsorship-employers. There are costs to get approved and costs for every individual EU citizen you sponsor so it will be increasingly more difficult and expensive to hire international workers going forward! 

 

WHAT DO I NEED TO DO NOW? 

If you are using The Square, we will take care of and comply with the new legislation to ensure that your contract workforce is 100% compliant to work in the UK.

 

If you not using The Square and already employ or plan to employ EU citizens in 2021 you will need to ensure that each and every one of them have the correct valid proof of ID and right to work. We recommend you start this process now to ensure neither you or your team are caught out without the correct documentation.
